Retention of Placenta

Generally, the fetal membranes are expelled within six hours after parturition. Sometimes, due to lack of myometrial contractions, the membranes remain attached to the uterine caruncles and this in turn leads to delayed involution of the uterus. This condition is called “jeri na dalnaâ€_x009d_ or retention of placenta. To treat this, Lalit Kumar feeds a few fresh leaves of bamboo to his cattle. The plant is reported to act as ecbolic (Chopra, R. N. (1933): Indigenous Drugs of India; Their Medical and Economic Aspects, The Art Press, Calcutta, India. Book: 550pp). Ecbolic substances are drugs, which promote the expulsion of the contents of the uterus by exciting uterine contractions.
