Checking the Growth of Ticks with Black Cutch

Some farmers in Orissa use the round shaped fruits of kaitha or black cutch (Acacia catechu) in an innovative way for eradicating ticks from cowsheds. The farmers claim that their method also hinders the further growth of ticks. The process involves making a hole in the fruit at a place where it joins the stem. The seed and pulp of the fruit is taken out through this hole. Four to five such empty fruits are hung at different places in a cowshed. The farmers feel that probably the fruits of black cutch emit an odour which repels the ticks and also stops their breeding effectively.
