Masala Bolus for Crops

Mr Singaravelu, a gardener employed in a private engineering college, is a young man who has experimented with many green technologies for control of crop pests. He is a regular reader of Num Vali Velanmai and tries to test the published practices in farmers’ fields. He read about administering ‘masala bolus,’ a traditional herbal recipe, to animals against digestive disorders. The masala bolus has been developed by a healer, Mr Mookkan, of Melaurappanur .Singaravelu thought about trying the masala bolus out on crops. It worked! The preparation boosted the growth of the plants. Here is the standardised list of the required ingredients. Take two handful leaves each of avarampoo (Cassia auriculata), manjanathi (Morinda tinctoria), kolinji (Tephrosia purpurea), vishnukiranthi (Evolvulus spp.), and a leaf sheath of sotrukatralai (Aloe vera). From the drug store one should purchase 50 grams each of coriander, sukku (dried ginger), garlic bulblets, pepper, asafoetida and cashewnut. In addition, one should buy 10 grams of cardomom, two pieces of coconut, 100 grams of turmeric, and half a kilo each of onion and jaggery. All the herbs except sotrukatralai should be dried and powdered. All the spices should be pounded well. Now the sotrukatralai, onion, coconut and jaggery should be ground along with the remaining ingredients which have been powdered already. It should not be diluted with water. This mixture should be made into small lemon-size boluses (up to 10 boluses can be made) and sprinkled with turmeric powder. Take two boluses and dissolve in 10 litres of water and spray on horticultural crops. This will boost the setting of the fruits and enhance their taste. The masala bolus also increases the resistance power of plants against pest and diseases.
